Applications of Thermal Actuators

August 20, 2026

Thermal actuators integrate temperature sensing and actuation functions into a single device and are commonly used in applications such as temperature control, fluid mixing and diverting, freeze protection, and high-temperature shut-off.

From actuators to valve products such as thermal bypass valves, thermostatic mixing valves, tempering valves, and thermostatic balancing valves, thermal actuators serve as key operational components within these devices.

Thermostatic actuators function as valve actuators, opening or closing valves based on temperature setpoints to, for example, continuously regulate the flow of hot water to radiators heating a room.

Thermal actuators combined with heat sources such as positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistors are known as wax motors and are commonly used in appliances such as washing machines or dishwashers to engage locks or operate dispenser latches.
