For optimal underfloor heating performance, these summer maintenance measures are essential!

January 19, 2026

Does underfloor heating require maintenance during summer? The answer is unequivocally yes. After the heating season concludes, performing proper maintenance and upkeep on heating equipment ensures its reliable operation during the subsequent heating period. Furthermore, correct maintenance procedures can effectively extend the service life of heating systems.

(2) Deterioration in Heating Performance

Water contains numerous microorganisms which, under certain conditions, produce substantial biological slime. When combined with scale deposits, these impurities can adhere to the walls of underfloor heating pipes.

Experimental data indicates that every millimetre of impurities adhering to the pipe walls reduces indoor temperatures by 1–2°C, representing a significant impact.

Furthermore, increased impurities on pipe walls impede the normal circulation of heating water, causing restricted flow and potentially leading to complete blockages in severe cases.

Underfloor Heating Maintenance Measures:

01. Inspection

After the heating season concludes and temperatures drop, thermal expansion and contraction may cause leaks at pipe joints or valves. For minor leaks, absorb water using a towel. For significant leaks, promptly contact property management or professional underfloor heating technicians for inspection and repair.

02. Filter Cleaning

Clean components such as filter valves and filters within the underfloor heating system. Inspect the filter mesh for damage or blockages. If the filter mesh is damaged, it must be replaced with a new one of the same specification and model, reinstalled as originally fitted. Take care during filter removal to prevent debris entering the pipes.

  03. Cleaning the Pipework

Many mistakenly believe that underfloor heating systems, being sealed environments, do not accumulate dust and thus require no cleaning.

However, water naturally contains numerous microorganisms. The looped pipework structure of underfloor heating systems, with its complex configuration and extended length, readily forms scale deposits when water temperatures fluctuate, creating an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

Typically, a 1mm scale buildup reduces water temperature by approximately 6°C, diminishes flow volume, slows circulation velocity, and lowers indoor temperatures by 1–2°C. This explains why many households perceive underfloor heating becoming less effective over time. Beyond substantial energy wastage, severe blockages may render pipes permanently inoperable, causing irreversible damage.

Therefore, timely pipe cleaning ensures the underfloor heating system maintains optimal heat dissipation, significantly extending its operational lifespan. Under normal circumstances, underfloor heating pipes should be cleaned every 1-2 years.

04. Full-Water Maintenance

When the underfloor heating system is deactivated, pipes are typically maintained with a full water charge. This protects the pipework and prolongs its service life. However, this does not involve retaining the original heated water. Instead, the existing water should be drained, the pipes thoroughly flushed clean, and any air within the system purged. Water should then be retained within the pipes until the next heating season commences.

How often should underfloor heating maintenance be performed?

Underfloor heating maintenance is generally recommended every three to four years. If utilising a condensing boiler, annual boiler servicing is advised.

Can underfloor heating maintenance be performed independently?

Non-professionals should refrain from undertaking this themselves to avoid potential complications.

When is the best time for underfloor heating maintenance?

Underfloor heating maintenance can be performed at any time. Note that HVAC companies often offer discounted maintenance packages during warmer months, making this period cost-effective for servicing.

Summary: Ensuring long-term, safe, and stable operation of your underfloor heating system – delivering comfortable temperatures throughout winter – hinges on diligent routine maintenance.
